Slate Magazine Presents History of Slave Trade in Interactive Map
The map shows more than 20,000 voyages with the slaves from 1545 to 1860.
Slate, an online magazine published an interactive map of the 315 year history of slave ship voyages across the Atlantic Ocean. The map provides information about how many ships sailed from 1545 until slavery was abolished.
Every dot on the map represents a ship with slaves. The bigger the dot, the more slaves were onboard. If you press pause and move the cursor to the dot, you will learn the ship’s country of origin, place of departure and destination.
The map and the diagram below were created based on data from the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database project.
