I have no home

— «I’ve got nowhere to return», «I have no home», «I don’t know what happened to my house» — I heard these words all the time from internally displaced people and forced migrants. They live in basements, in subways, in temporary shelters, they look for new apartments and move from one place to another. They are tired of being guests in other people’s houses, but they have nowhere to return.

While traveling around the country and documenting the changes that the full-scale invasion brought onto people’s lives, I decided to shoot another series about the war, but make it different — artistic rather than documentary. I believe that we have to use all kinds of languages to talk about the war. When people abroad are getting used to it and stop caring, I want to scream louder and louder about the war in my country that still hurts and kills.

The first time I took a photo of the walls burnt down by Russian missiles, it was a subconscious move. I took a picture and carried on documenting people’s stories. I remember coming into a demolished building in Northern Saltivka, Kharkiv, for the first time in spring 2022. I stood there for a long time, trying and failing to understand where am I and who am I.

When I went to other places — Odesa, the Dnipro region, the Kyiv region — I started visiting wrecked houses on purpose and taking pictures of the walls. Currently, I continue traveling around the country, documenting everything and never forgetting to capture another wall on camera. This is my way to remind people of the emptied places, which have their own history.
