Infographic of the Day: How Fast Opinions Change in the US
The authors looked at the pace of adopting the laws, which divide American society.
Bloomberg published an infographic Pace of Social Change, showing how fast the states of the United States of America adopted the laws, which caused the most controversy among the American citizens. Among others, these are the laws that make abortions legal, allow women to vote, allow interracial and same-sex marriages. The data covers the period between 1787 and 2015.
The authors of the infographic note that the process of social change often looks similar. At first there are several liberal states that amend local laws, they are quickly joined by 10-20 other states, and then the corresponding legislation is adopted at federal level.
