Tunisia in the Late 19th Century in Color

The photographs taken in 1899 are a part of the Library of Congress collection.

Mashable published a selection of antique postcards that capture Tunisia in the late 19th century in color.

The images were created with the help of photochrom process, invented in the 1880s by an employee at the Swiss printing company Orell, Gessner, Füssli named Hans Jacob Schmid.

To receive the final image from an original negative, photographers who use this technology make several lithographic printing forms for each color tone: their number is usually between 6 and 15, depending of the required quality of color reproduction.
