Finalists of Smithsonian Photo Contest 2016

The name of the winner of the grand prize and winners in each of the categories will be announced in late March.

The jury of the 14th international Smithsonian Photo Contest published a shortlist: the finalists were selected from over 48,000 submissions sent by photographers from 146 countries.

The shortlist includes 70 photographs in seven categories: Natural World, Travel, People, Mobile, American Experience, Altered Image, and Sustainable Travel.

The winners will be named during the award ceremony on March 28. Voting for the best photograph is also open on the website of the Smithsonian magazine — the winner will receive the Reader’s Choice prize.

The best photographs from last year’s contest are available here.
