Vogue Brazil Photoshopped Models into Paralympic Athletes
Vogue Brazil launched a campaign to support paralympic athletes, by photoshopping photographs of regular models to make them disabled, Gizmodo writes.
Despite the campaign being supported by Brazilian Paralympic team members Renato Leite and Bruna Alexandre, the magazine was criticized by many internet users and some media outlets.
“[It’s] hard to understand why Vogue Brazil felt the need to use models who aren’t disabled in a Paralympic photoshoot,” Richard Lane, who works for the British disabilities charity, said. “It’s so rare to see positive and powerful representations of disabled people in the media.”
“We knew it would be a punch in the gut, but we were there for a good cause,” Clayton Carneiro, art director of Vogue Brazil, commented on the campaign. He said that the magazine used the campaign to attract attention to the nearing Paralympic Games.
