Lytro introduces its second light field camera with the ability to refocus images

Lytro has unvailed the Illum, a camera with the ability to refocus pictures after the shutter snap and create “living images” in 3D format. It will be available for sale on the 15th of July, the sticker price will be $1599.

Lytro’s first generation of hardware came out in 2011. Despite its new fangled-sensor technology that could create 3D pictures post shutter snap instead of regular jpeg, the consumers were appalled by its boxy, toy-like design.

The company’s second attempt offers the updated version inside more traditional form – a constant F2 lens with 8x optical zoom and 30-250mm equivalent range.

Because of its unique sensor, the camera’s resolution can’t be conveyed in megapixels. Instead, Lytro uses “megarays” of angular resolution – the amount of light rays that the camera captures divided by one million. At 40 megarays, the Illum captures almost four times the light as the Light Field, which topped out at 11 megarays.

After image capture, the innovative software platform allows photographers to adjust aspects of images that were previously fixed, such as focus, tilt, perspective shift and depth of field, which empowers the photographer to create multi-dimensional images.

They can alter the parameters of the photos not only on the camera’s display, but also on a computer – as Lytro comes with program Desktop 4.0. They can continue working with the edited images using Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and Aperture.

Before it debuts in July, the Illum is available for preorder. The price will be $100 cheaper – $1499.
