Best Wildlife Photographs Of 2014 Selected In London

The winners of Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014 competition have been announced.

This year the Natural History Museum (UK, London) together with BBC Worldwide celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. On this occasion the winners of the competition were announced at a gala event held by Catherine Elizabeth, Duchess of Cambridge.

US photojournalist Michael Nichols was named Overall Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014 with a prize of £10 000 for his photo, “The Last Great Picture,” featuring a lionesses with their cubs, resting on a rocky outcrop. It emerged that three females of the pride were killed several months later on the flatlands.

“Cuts through the dust and haze, transforms the light and turns the moment into something primal, biblical almost,” commented the photographer. The photo was made as part of the photo project about Tanzanian lions for National Geographic Magazine.

The best photographs will be shown in Moscow at the exhibition of the Natural History Museum which will open on 24th of October. The images will be also published in BBC Wildlife Magazine.
