Photojournalist Shoots Warriors in India
A photojournalist from NBC, Mark Hartman, visited the Holi festival – an Indian celebration of spring, known as the festival of colors. Hartman shot photos the modern followers of the ancient order of warriors, Akaali (immortal army).
The order was established in 17th century by Sikhs from Punjab, who stood against the British and fought for purity of Sikhism. When India became independent, the number of Akaali was reduced. Nowadays it’s a cultural and religious community which preserves traditions of ancestors. According to Hartman, many of the Akaali he photographed work as doctors, lawyers, engineers and artists, and only wear their traditional costumes during national celebrations.
