German Artists Turn Swastika Into Innocent Images

In several months, artists who joined the campaign have covered over 50 Nazi symbols.

Berlin artists launched a Paintback campaign where they turn swastika found on the facades of cities into innocent images, The Verge writes. The campaign started several months ago, but drew the attention of the media only now.

Ibo Omari, one of the authors of the initiative, said that he had the idea of the campaign when a man came into the shop where he works to buy several cans of spray paint. The client said he saw Nazi insignia on one of the playgrounds and wanted to cover it.

Omari advised him to save his money and promised to deal with it himself. Very soon, an image of a mosquito who is trying to escape a net appeared where swastika was.

Since then, the artists have covered about 50 Nazi symbols. Artists in other cities all over Germany have joined them in their effort. Some of their works are shown in a one-minute video posted on YouTube.
