Potential Aftermath of Nuclear Attacks Shown on an Interactive Map
The project was created by the team from the Future of Life Institute.
Several months ago the US National Security Archives published a 1956 list that includes about 1,100 locations in the USSR, China, and North Korea that were viewed as potential nuclear targets during the Cold War.
Based on this data, a team from the Future of Life Institute developed an interactive map, which shows the possible aftermath of such nuclear attacks: pressing on each of the dots on the map recreates the effect of the explosion and shows the affected territory and the number of potential victims.
The authors published one more visualization that shows not only the radius of each of the explosions, but also the amount of radioactive fallout.
The interactive map is available at the webpage of the project.
