Link of the Day: Infographic Explains Manual Settings of a Camera

London designer Simon Roberts created an interactive infographic which explains the manual settings in the camera.

It shows a night scene with a flying helicopter and has four controllers: light, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. If the users moves the scrollbar, the infographic will show how the values of the four parameters influence the resulting image.

Roberts explained that it is difficult for the new users to understand the connection between exposure, aperture, and ISO. Despite the fact that there are numerous manuals that explain this, a 2012 study showed that 2/3 of non-professional photographers never took pictures in manual mode. As an example, Roberts cites the exposure triangle that is supposed to visualize how the parameters are related to each other, but it only confuses beginner photographers. In his work, the designer was inspired by the London Underground Tube Map by Harry Beck, where geographic accuracy was sacrificed for the sake of visualization.
