Rare Archive Photographs of African Americans Posted Online

The archive was given to Cornell University free of charge by collectors Stephen and Beth Loewentheil several years ago.

Cornell University posted a collection of photographs online, which documents the life of African Americans, Artnet writes. The archive has over 600 photographs taken between 1860 and 1960.

It includes both pictures of political activists and fighters for the rights of Black population and pictures that capture everyday life of the African American community.

“One of the goals [in putting the digital collection online] is to push back against the predominance of material on African-Americans as enslaved people or working in menial jobs or other stereotypical situations,” the researchers say.
