Link of the Day: Avant Garde Magazine Archive

The full archive of the iconic magazine was posted online.

Avant Garde was published between January 1968 and July 1971. There was a total of 16 issues of the magazine. Despite the short lifespan, the magazine left its mark in the world of art. Avant Garde was published in New York City by editor Ralph Ginzburg and art director Herb Lubalin. The readers remembered it mostly for its harsh criticism of the American government and society and the abundance of erotic content. For instance, the cover of the sixth issue featured a naked pregnant woman, and the 11th issue included erotic engravings by John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

However, the biggest legacy of the magazine is probably its logo, which was developed by Lubalin. It later became the base for Avant Garde font, which is still used nowadays.

Any Avant Garde issue can now be read online.
